A relutância em condenar o vaiamento da equipe da Inglaterra por tomar o joelho no mês passado, o primeiro -ministro e o secretário do Interior Priti Patel, desceram do lado errado de um argumento idiota para que qualquer governo se envolva. Mas quanto mais o lado de Gareth Southgate foi, maior o desafio para a Boris & Co.

But what has been clear in the past few weeks is that Johnson, and many of his colleagues, have as much a clue about football as I do quantum physics. The Tory leadership may consider footballers and football fans to be thick. But that is to grossly misread the profile of the average player and, indeed, supporter of 2021. It also fails to take account of the huge numbers of folk who take little or no interest in the beautiful game – until the England team, particularly one as wholesome as this one- take the country on a journey of success, providing a much-needed ‘feelgood’ factor that, frankly, politicians struggle to provide even in the best of times.
Quanto mais cedo Johnson poderá desenhar uma linha sob essa infeliz e desnecessária out de melhoria, melhor para os conservadores. Caso contrário, o que parecia ser uma vitória no shoo-in nas próximas eleições gerais pode ser uma coisa mais próxima.
